
Competitions report to January 23 2012
The 6th round of the Seniors Winter Putter was played last Tuesday. The winner was Peter Branch with 34 points, Second Denis Dayman 33 points and third Senior Captain Owen Cook 32 points. The Over 70's Winter 9 hole competition was also won by Peter Branch 17 Points, 2nd George Hoskins 16 points and third Ron Middleton 13 Points.
34 players took part in the Monday Morning Mingles the greensome nine hole competition was won by terry and Julia Brown net 36.6. 2nd was Margaret Hoskins net 36.8 and 3rd Sam Wright and Maureen Stapleford net 38.6. The best four ball of the day was Ray Foster with Joyce McLaren and Tony and Beryl Houghton net 78.9.
The ladies nine hole competitions have been well supported throughout the winter season. Recent Winners have been - December - 3 Clubs and a Putter 1st Denise Waldron 15 points, 2nd Chris Cook 14 points, Nine hole Stableford, 1st Avis Webb 16 points, 2nd Julia Brown 13 points, Nine Hole Medal 1st Diane Orson net 43, 2nd Maureen Stapleford net 43.5, January - Nine Hole Stableford 1st Joyce McLaren 14 points, 2nd Maureen Stapleford 14 points, 9 Hole par 1st Yvette Joyce -1, 2nd Alison Gatward -2, Four Ball Texas Scramble 1st Alison Gatward, Denise Waldron, Chris Cook, Dorothy Jaggers net 35.1, 2nd Margaret Pedge, Jenny Platts, Jose Jones and Isabel Gilland net 37.75, The nine hole Winter League is currently a close contest with Maureen Stapleford topping the league table closely followed by Diane Orson in second spot and Drina Terzza third, not decided until the end of March there is still a lot to play for.
Competitions Report to January 17 2012
The gents section played the third round of the Autumn Trophy on Sunday 15th. Playing a four ball Texas Scramble 62 players took part in the frosty but sunny conditions which produced some unlikely bounces and gave plenty of run on the ball.
In first place were Chris Radford, Bill Hurrell, Roy Aldred & Phil Newton Nett 61, Second, Tony South, Frank Williams & Glen Price Nett 62 and Third Tim Dean, Richard Gough, Jon Cliffe & Mark Price Nett 66 on count back. At the halfway point of the winters competition there is a three way tie for the lead between Jon Cliffe, Phil Newton and Chris Radford, all having gained 25 points but there is still time for some of those chasing at their heels to overtake them..
The stableford better ball competition played on Saturday 7th January was a closely fought result with one point separating the top three places. Tony Petersen and Billy Kevan came out on top with 42 points one shot clear of runners up Owen Cook and Neil Eaves with 41 points on count back from Graham Keast and John Swayne in third place also 41 points. The two's sweep was shared by 8 players: Tony Petersen, Owen Cook, Neil Eaves, Peter Poolan, Bev Blake, Russell Freeman, Dean Carmichael and Geoff Townsend.
32 players took part in the Monday Morning Mingles. Mingles organisers, Owen and Chris Cook won the day with a net 36.3, only 0.1 clear of second placed Ray Stone and Cheryl Osborne net 36 .4. Frank and Brenda Williams were third net 37.2. The best four ball was shared by two teams, Bob Luke with Elaine Shelton and Frank and Brenda Williams and also Vic and Mavis Newham with Ray Stone and Cheryl Osborne, both teams having scored a combined net 76.2.
Competitions report to January 10 2012
On New Year's Eve the gents played a Canadian Foursomes with some tremendous scores returned.
The winners were Dave Guntrip and Phil Newton with a net 60 only half a shot clear of runners up Bob Luke and Billy Kevan net 60.5. Third was Geoff Townsend and Mezz Watchorn with a net 62.
64 players took part in the second round of the Autumn Trophy. The winners were Chris Carmichael, Andy Westwood, Jon Cliffe and Darren Pick with 94 points. 2nd was Phil Curtis, Bill Hurrell, Adie Stokes and Richard Haines 93 points and 3rd was Chris Radford, Adie Grant, Phil Hewes and Julian Kisiel 85 points.
Jon Cliffe is the early leader of the competition but there are still four rounds to go.
The gents Christmas competition was a festive affair with all teams drawn from the hat and every team receiving a prize from Brandy or Champagne to a packet of stuffing for the last place. The winners were Gerry Stephens, Mick Curtis, Mick Gamble and Bill Robson, 2nd Matt Hatton, Adie Stokes and Roy Aldred and 3rd neil Curtis, Clive Sharpe, Tony Petersen and Doug Woolley. The competition was followed by mince pies and sausage rolls with a nice tot of whisky or port. Neil Curtis provided the tots of whisky on the 1st tee.

In second place was Denis Dayman and Alison Gatward net 34.2 and third was Ray Foster wit Maureen Stapleford net 35.8. The best combined four ball score was Frank and Brenda Williams with Denis Dayman and Maureen Stapleford net 71.4
Competitions report to December 19th
On Sunday the club held a children's Christmas Party with Mr Odd Socks providing the entertainment. It was a super afternoon with very excited children when Santa arrived across the golf course.
Melton's senior section played their Christmas competition as a four ball am-am stableford over fourteen holes with the best two scores to count on each hole. Due to the winning team being a man short Doug Woolley stood in as a ghost player for that team as well as playing for the second placed team. Doug having one of his best rounds of the year was the leading scorer on the day which proved to be beneficial to both the winners and the runners up. After the competition a prize presentation was held in the clubhouse where the senior section captain, Owen Cook, presented prizes to all the competition entrants.

The ladies section Christmas Competition was played as a singles stableford over nine holes. The ladies played a shotgun start with the weather being kind the rain holding off until they had finished their game.
The winner was Chris Cook on count back from runner up Julia Brown both with 17 points. The competition was followed by tea, cake and mince pies and a prize for everyone.
The Monday Morning Mingles Christmas competition was a fun day with 42 players taking part in the competition followed by a Christmas meal and prize presentation. With the top six teams taking prizes it was a very closely contested event. The eventual winners were John Squires, Anne Creed, Ray Stone and Chris Cook with 55 points. In second place were Ray Foster, Di orison, Elaine Shelton and Joyce McLaren with 53 points, third place went to the team of Alan and Drina Terrza, Neville Lenton and Pat Bloomer scoring 52 points. The fourth, fifth and sixth placed teams all scored 51 points and the positions were decided by count back. Fourth team was Eddie and Gay Cham, Dorothy Jaggers and John Eastman, fifth team Sam Wright, Maureen Stapleford, Geoff and Liz Clark, sixth team Tom and Kathie Finn, Tony and Beryl Houghton.
24 players played in the 5th December mingles competition. Winners were Margaret and George Hoskins net 36.6, second Bob Luke and Anita Herbert net 38.2, third Vic and Mavis Newham net 41.6. The best four ball score was by Denis Dayman, Alison Gatward, Bob Luke and Anita Herbert net 80
The 19th December mingles competition saw 32 play. First place was Tony and Beryl Houghton net 34.0, runners up Frank and Brenda Williams net 36.2 and third Haydn and Liz Snow net 36.8. The best four ball was beryl and Tony Houghton with John Squires and Joyce McLaren net 74.4
The gents Am-Am on the 10th December was won by Jack Inguanta, Doug Woolley, Phil Curtis and Steve Goddard with 122 on count back from Geoff Townsend, Brian Geeson, John Shelton and Mezz Watchorn also 122, third was Steven Keats, Gerry Stephens, Eddie Cham and John Swayne 120. The twos sweep was shared by Steven Keast, Tom Rayson and Geoff Townsend.
The winners of the better ball par competition Paul Blount and Kevin Griggs finished 5 up on the course, an excellent score in winter conditions. In second place, Tim Buxton and Nathan Cliffe returned 3 up and third placed Guy Rayson with Phil Curtis were one behind 2 up. Mark Muggleton, Simon Palmer, Matt Hatton and Chris Carmichael took the twos sweep.
The third and fourth rounds of the seniors Winter Putter competition have been played. Robin Jones won the third round with 34 points, one point clear of Richard Grieve and Vic Newham who were second and third both with 33 points. The fourth round was won by Peter Branch with 32 points, Frank Williams took second place on count back from Richard Grieve in third both having scored 31 points.
The third and fourth rounds of the over 70 nine hole competitions have been won by John Parker 18 points, second Vic Newham 17 points and Peter Branch 18 points and second, once again, Vic Newham 17 points.
Competitions report to November 14th 2011
County Success for Melton Juniors - Melton Mowbray Junior Captain - Sam Pollard has won the L&RGU Junior Order of merit for the boys gross scores having achieved 103 order of merit points over the season 11 points clear of runner up Chris Abbott from Kilworth Springs with 92. Sam has had a tremendous season and has excelled in County competitions. Sam has played in 28 qualifying competitions this season and cut his handicap by 2.2 shots from 4.9 to 2.7 playing 3.0
Junior Member - Jake Mogg has also had an incredible season and is runner up for net scores in the L&RGU order of merit with 77 order of merit points only 2 points behind the winner Latham Russell from Forest Hill Golf Club. Jake has worked hard on his game this year and began the season on a 25.1 handicap. Has played 23 qualifying competitions and finished the season with a handicap of 15.8. A tremendous achievement.
Monday Morning Mixed Mingles - The November 7th Monday Morning Mingles was played in the cold and drizzle, a smaller field than usual of 36 took part. The winners were Julia and Terry Brown with net 35.2, 2nd Haydn and Liz Snow net 36.8 and 3rd Alan and Drina Terzza net 37.0. The best four ball score was Sam Wright and Maureen Stapleford with Haydn and Liz Snow net 75.5. The 14th November winners were Denis Dayman and Alison Gatward net 34.8, Alan and Drina Terzza were second net 36.0 and 3rd Ray Foster with Diane Orson net 36.4. The best four ball was won by Alan and Drina Terzza with Vic and Mavis Newham
Seniors - The seniors waltz scramble on the 1st November was won by Tom Eadon, John Squires and Owen Cook net 73 4 shots clear of runners up John Eastman, Peter Maine and Robin Jones net 69 on count back from third placed Frank Williams, Tom Hall and Richard Grieve.
The first round of the Seniors Winter Putter took place on the 8th November. Playing a singles stableford Richard Grieve won with 37 points, one shot clear of runner up Tom Eadon 36 points. Ray Stone was third 35 points. The veteran members of the seniors section won the nine hole stableford. Walter Skerritt won with a two under handicap 20 points and runner up Walter Griffin shot a level 18 points.
A good field of 88 players took part in the Gents four ball Am-Am on Saturday with some strong teams taking part. The winning team of Gavin Baxter, Stephen Draisey, Bill Hurrell and Jon Baxter scored 93 points, runners up Lee Shephard, Steve Newman, Kevin Newman and Wayne Hazeldine 91 points and in third place Bernard Jamieson, Andy Westwood, Andy Pedlar and Gerry Stephens 89 points. The highlight of the day was Barry Caunt scoring a gross two Eagle on the 425 yard par 4 second hole earning his team 5 points. Other two's scored were: Richard South, Guy Fishwick, Steven Draisey, Geoff Townsend, Brian Haines, Guy Rayson, Mark Muggleton, Peter Keast, Phil Millward, Mick Wilson, Brian Cole and Billy Kevan.
COMPETITIONS REPORT TO 31st OCTOBER
Monday Morning Mixed Mingles
44 players took part in the Monday Morning Mingles this week. Playing in milder conditions than of late the winners were Liz and Haydn Snow with nett 31.4. Runners up Joyce Mclaren and Tom Hall scored nett 33.0 and Elaine Shelton with Tom Eadon came third with nett 34.4. The best four ball of the day was Liz and Haydn Snow with Pat Bloomer and Nev Lenton with a combined nett 67.8
Gent's Better Ball Medal
The gents' better ball medal no Saturday 29th October was well supported with 84 entries. In a closely fought competition with excellent scores returned the winners, Dermot Coady and Chris Shardlow shot a net 63, one clear of runners up Adrian Stokes and Dean Carmichael with net 64. Dave Bentley and Nick Bromell were third net 66. The twos sweep was won by Steven Abbott, Jon Baxter, Steve Goddard and Adrian Stokes.
Sunday Stableford 23rd October - Tim Dean was the overall winter of the Sunday Stableford with a nett scord of 42. 60 competitors took part in very windy conditions. In the 0-12 Mark Muggleton came first with a nett 36 with runner up Chris Carmichael with 34. Clive Sharp, with 36 and Roy Aldred with 33 came first and second in the 13-20's and in the 21-28's, winner David McKain came in with a score of 41. John Wade was runner up with 36.
2's competition winners were Chris Carmichael, Andrew Dul, Sam Pollard, Vic Newham, Mike Catlin and John Wade.
Seniors Tony Houghton Scramble - The third round of this competition was won by Bob Parkinson, Peter Branch, Robin Jones and Dave Beasley with 61.44.
The overall winner after the third round was Tom Eadon with a total of 191.38, followed by Robin Jones in 2nd place with 194.05 and Vic Newham with 194.49 in 3rd place.
Monday Morning Mixed Mingles - 24th October
Another cold and windy day for the Mingles when 34 players took part. Al and Drina Terzza came 1st with a nett 37. In joint 2nd, Vic and Mavis Newham and Frank and Brenda Williams had a score of nett 38. Nev Lenton and Pat Bloomer, with Walter Griffin and Peggy Newton took joint 3rd with 39.4. Best fourball went to Al & Drina and Paddy & Gwen Doyle with 77.8.
COMPETITIONS REPORT TO 18TH OCTOBER
Seniors
An excellent score from the winners of the Seniors 3 Ball Better Ball Stableford today considering the blustery conditions they had to play in. 1st with 86 points were Malcom Bryson, Alf Tozer and Brian Gromett followed by Ray Stone, Peter Branch and Dennis Dayman with 71 points. Joint 3rd with 70 points were Fred Johnson, Syd Wharton, Bob Stark and Frank Williams, Vic Newham and Robin Jones.
Monday Morning Mixed Mingles - 17th October
Forty players took part in the Mixed Mingles on a cold and windy morning. Husband and wife, Owen and Chris Cook took 1st place with a nett of 32.0, followed in 2nd place by Paddy and Gwen Doyle with nett 34.8. In 3rd place, Terry and Julia Brown came in with nett 36.2 with Best Fourball going to Owen and Chris with Walter Griffin and Peggy Newton nett 74.4.
Interteam Championship Result
To complete a successful season, the senior team consisting of Frank Williams, Owen Cook, John Squires, John Parker, Paddy Doyle, Robin Jones, Ken Dimaline and Denis Dayman were triumphant in winning the Interteam Championship. The winning score was 185 stableford points with play from the white tees.
Stableford Singles 11th October - In first place David Guntrip with 36ocb. Brendan Boyce came 2nd with 36, followed in 3rd place by Stephen Draisey with a score of 34. 2's winner was Colin Mitchell.
TO SATURDAY 8TH OCTOBER
In rather unpleasant weather, with drizzle and a slight wind, there were 81 entries in the Saturday Medal. David Poolan took the overall win with a nett score of 64. Chris Radford took the lead in the 0-12 with a nett score of 65, followed by David's Dad, Peter Poolan as runner up with a nett score of 66. 13-20 handicaps winner was David Guntrip with a nett of 67 and with a nett of 69 Rob Allen was runner up. Bernard Jamieson won the 21-28's at nett 65 with Jon Cliffe in second place with nett of 71. Colin Mitchell took the Best Gross at 71.
In total there nine 2's winners sharing the prize money, Adrian Forks, Colin Mitchell, Peter Poolan, Mick Wilson, Jack Inguanta, Cyril Kenzie, Tim Mortimer, Gerry Stephens and Jevan Goddard.Stableford Singles - 11 October
TO 3RD OCTOBER
Julia Brown and Pete Poolan represented the club in the County competition Baxter Trophy. Played as a mixed foursome the pair returned a gross 79 net 67.5 and took the best net prize winning £40 worth of Marks and Spencer vouchers.
The North Leicestershire County B Team League held their end of season finals day at Melton Mowbray on Sunday. With 10 players taking part from each team teams representing Melton Mowbray, Beedles Lake, Western Park, Park Hill, Humberstone Heights, Whetstone, Forest Hill, Breedon Priory and Kilworth Springs played an individual stableford off ¾ handicap with the top 7 scores from each team added together to achieve a team result.
Melton Mowbray Vice Captain and B team captain, John Rawlings, organised the day. An excellent prize table had been put on including top of the range hampers from Dickinson and Morris and golf gear. Each player received a Dickinson and Morris Pork Pie. A trophy was presented to the winning team and individual winners received the prizes.
The winning team were Melton Mowbray with 227. The individual competition was closely fought with top places being decided by count back. 1stplace went to Darren Deacon, (Forest Hill) with 35 points on count back from runner up Adam Khan (Humberstone Heights) 35 points on count back from 3rd Joe Slater (Beedles Lake) also 35. 4th was Mick Davis (Whetstone) 34 on count back, 5th Neil Eaves, (Melton Mowbray) 34 on count back, from 6th Nick Pattison (Melton Mowbray) on count back, 7th John Squires (Melton Mowbray) on count back, 8th Pete Webb (Forest Hill) 34 points and 9th Guy Rayson (Melton Mowbray) 33 on count back from 10th Bob Watts Forest Hill 33 points.
Nearest the Pin s were won by Joe Rumming 5th hole (Forest Hill), Wes Eyden 7th hole (Beedles Lake), Bob Watts 14th hole (Forest Hill) and Steve Long 16th hole (Western Park). The longest drive was won by John Rawlings from Melton Mowbray.
The competition was followed by a meal, prize presentation and celebrations of a successful season.
