MELTON LADIES ARE COUNTY FOURSOMES CHAMPIONS!
19th September 2010
On Sunday 19th September the Melton Mowbray Ladies County Foursomes Team won the Final of the Leicestershire and Rutland Ladies County Golf Association County Foursomes Competition.
The ladies played Birstall ladies on the neutral ground of Cosby Golf Club for the title of L&RLCGA County Foursomes Champions, with neither team having won it since the 1970’s. Melton Mowbray last won the competition 31 years ago in 1979.
Playing foursome match play format each match had to complete 18 holes and the scores of both pairs representing each team added together.
The pairings of Peggy Newton with Leah Radford and Julia Brown partnered by Catherine Smith represented Melton on Sunday whilst reserves Drina Terzza and Dorothy Jaggers caddied for Catherine and Julia. Drina had played in the second and third rounds of the competition with great success when Catherine was unavailable.
Peggy and Leah were first out and lost the first hole but then settled down, halved the second and won the third to get back to all square. The game then turned into a battle to the end with Peggy and Leah knuckling down against the Birstall ladies and not allowing them to regain the advantage of getting back into the lead. In a nip and tuck tussle with the Melton pair either all square or one up, they fought hard and left the 15th green 2 up. They then halved the 16th and lost the 17th hole to be one up with one to play. They finished the game with a par on the 18th to win 2 up on their opponents.
Julia and Catherine were up against it from the beginning their opponents shooting level par on the first three holes and the Melton ladies left the fourth green four down. However, Catherine sunk a tremendous putt on the 5th to pull one back and by the time the pair left the 9th green they had fought hard to come back to all square. After this they were never behind winning five out of the next six holes on the back nine to leave the 16th green 5 up with 2 to play. The pair lost the last two holes but won their game 3 up on the Birstall ladies resulting in the team having an aggregate score of 5 up for the match and Melton Mowbray ladies reclaiming the County title after a 31 year gap.
